According to BMAC Curator Emerita Mara Williams, "Mallory Lake was a master of pastel. Her surface textures range from the dry, velvety softness we usually associate with the medium to an almost painterly pooling of color. It is, however, the subtlety and richness of her tones that truly astonishes."
To capture that "subtlety and richness" in the form of a print, photographer Jim Thomas of Temple, New Hampshire, photographed Lake’s original pastel painting, which was featured in the 2013 BMAC exhibit Between Dark & Night: New Pastels by Mallory Lake. Thomas and Lake then color-matched the resulting digital file to the original artwork. Barrington Editions created several proofs from the digital file, making adjustments as necessary, until the artist and BMAC were satisfied that the color and definition of the original had been faithfully reproduced. BMAC then authorized a Bon à Tirer (“ready to pull”) proof, against which every print in the edition was matched. The edition was printed in August 2013 on archival printmaking paper with fade-resistant ink.
Mallory Lake (1950-2017) lived and worked in southern Vermont. Her artwork is held in the collections of Brandeis University's Rose Museum, the Currier Museum of Art, Boston Public Library, Middlebury College, and Norwich University, among others.
